Learner resources play an important role in training and developing knowledge and skills for the students.
Learner resources may include:
- Learner guide
- PowerPoint presentation
- Activity book
- Self-study guide
- Session plan
In-depth learner resources help students, trainers, and RTO management as follows:
Students – provide detailed information on each topic included in the unit requirements listed on training.gov.au so students can read, learn, and acquire skills and knowledge to complete the assessment task.
Activity books help students to get underpinning knowledge and skills to complete the summative assessments.
Trainers – In-depth learner resources help trainers to effectively train and prepare students for the summative assessment. Learner resources are also mapped with the training package requirements so trainers can refer to the mapping document and support the students as required.
PowerPoint presentations are also aligned with the learner guide to create flow in training.
Session plan will provide guidelines for trainers on how to structure each session.
RTO management (Compliance manager, RTO manager, CEO, Coordinator) – Learner resources are mapped with the training package requirements including performance criteria and knowledge evidence, so it is easy to demonstrate to the auditor that RTO is providing training according to the training package requirements.
Questions related to learner resources:
We receive many questions related to learner resources from industries, so I have added a few questions here:
Q1. ASQA made our learner resources non-compliant due to them not meeting the training package requirements. How can we manage this situation?
Discussion – RTO needs to make sure that learner resources meet the training package requirements. You need to map your learning resources with unit requirements including performance criteria, element and knowledge evidence.
After mapping, fill the gaps in the learner guide, PPT and other learner resources.
Provide learner resources mapping and updated resources to ASQA.
Q2. How can we make sure that our learner resources meet the training package requirements?
Discussion – The best way is to map the learner resources with assessment mapping documents. I suggest adding an additional column titled ‘learner resources’ in the existing mapping document.
After mapping, you may need to add information and content to cover all the requirements of the unit.
Q3. What do we need to check when we purchase learner resources from a third party provider?
Discussion: You should validate the sample units and make sure that the third party resources provider is providing the learner resources mapping.
After validation, you can make a judgement about whether the sample resources are meeting the training package requirements.
Q4. Does the learner guide need to have information related to questions in the formative and summative assessments?
Discussion: Learner guide should include enough information related to knowledge evidence so formative and summative questions can be answered.
Q5. How can the RTO use learning resources effectively?
Discussion: To use learning resources effectively, the RTO should follow these steps:
- Purchase or develop resources that meet the unit of competency requirements and have mapping documents for learner resources.
- Train your trainers in how to use these resources. Explain the purpose of each document and what steps need to be taken.
For example: we provided training to one of our client trainers on how to use each document of the learner resources and how to conduct effective training. In the session we discussed the self-study guide video links that can be used in training to increase engagement. - Trainer to explain the learner resources to students, focusing on how to use these resources to gain knowledge and completing the assessments.
- Monitor progress
- Improve as required
Q6. Why do we need to contextualise the session plan?
Discussion: Session plan must be aligned with the training and assessment delivery structure so you need to make sure that the session plans are updated according to the training and assessment structure.
For example: BSBPMG520 unit has 40 hours training and 20 hours assessment. You have 4 hours of sessions, so you need to create 15 sessions and add relevant information for each session.
